The depth of the armhole you speak about is critical, thanks for posting, but I also want to note–

A big armhole is a big part of the issue. The rest of the problems? Shoulders that are too wide, a sleeve cap that is too high, and to make this puzzle click together — big, stinking shoulder pads (usually of inferior quality). All of this contributes to the horrible fit in the lower picture.
